Who we are and what we do

The Madison Tech Clinic is an initiative by faculty and students at the University of Wisconsin-Madison to support survivors of intimate partner violence (IPV), sexual violence and other forms of technology enabled interpersonal abuse in the community.

We are a group of trained volunteers with technology expertise who conduct free, confidential consultations in partnership with local domestic abuse advocacy groups to help survivors who are facing stalking or harassment via technology. We provide support to survivors of technology abuse by scanning iPhones, iPads, and Android phones and auditing online personal accounts for issues that can impact the survivor’s privacy and security.

Scope and Services

During these consultations, our clients express their privacy and digital concerns and we provide technical advice to help them reduce their online exposure. Additionally, we are currently capable of auditing the privacy settings of the different accounts of our clients as well as performing non-intrusive scans and safety checks of their smartphones and tablets to determine if an abuser is misusing the devices for surveillance.

Our services are continuously evolving as we learn about the needs of our clients through our consultations. In the future, the Tech Clinic seeks to provide other services as well as extend our scan to laptops and other devices. While we develop rigorous technical procedures for these services, our current services can help identify and prevent technology abuse exploiting mobile devices and online accounts.

At the moment, we are unable to help survivors with scanning laptops and smart devices or gathering evidence of abuse. As a policy, we do not assist in counter-surveillance such as spying on someone else or gathering information about them.
